Condition Survey & Testing of External Surface of 83m Reinforced Concrete Chimney

Introduction Amcor Inspection.jpg
Vertigo Specialist High Access Services (Vertigo) were engaged by Amcor Fibre Packaging Australia to carry out a condition survey to the exterior concrete surface of an 83 meter high chimney at the Fairfield Mill site in Melbourne. The chimney is a reinforced concrete structure that vents combustion products from a steam and power cogeneration plant.

Utilising Industrial Rope Access, methods an inspection of the entire external surface was completed in March 2002 following detailed testing at selected areas in August 2001. This project draws on Vertigo’s expertise to provide investigation consultancy and remedial services to the exterior facades of structures.

Scope of Work
The entire exterior concrete surface of the chimney was subjected to visual and mechanical delamination surveys from rope access. Defect types were recorded on elevation view drawings and photographs taken. Any dangerously loose material encountered was removed as a temporary safety measure and exposed reinforcement coated with a zinc primer. In addition, in situ materials testing and sampling were performed to determine concrete cover values, carbonation depth and chloride content of the concrete. The findings from the site survey were compiled into a report evaluating the in situ materials condition and durability with recommendations for appropriate repair strategy options.

Outcome
Vertigo successfully completed the survey and investigation on schedule and a report was issued reviewing in detail the condition of the RC chimney and remedial options.
